Chapter 5:

The Closer We Get

“It’s just been hard keeping up with everything, you know? Trying to manage regular work, trying to start my own thing, working out, sleeping right, friends, trying to relax once in a while, and then of course, Alicia. I’m going fucking insane. And she’s relentless, you know? Like, if I have a free minute, she automatically thinks I owe it to her, but it’s like, I have my own shit too. I’m really trying to work with her to strike a balance, but it goes both ways, you know?”

Kevin took a sip of his margarita. He and Adam were at Tiempo. They were sitting up at the bar—it was still daytime, so they were the only ones.

“Whatever. It is what it is, right?” Kevin continued, taking another drink.

“Yeah, man. Shit’s hard,” Adam said. “But look. Look how far you’ve come. It’s impressive. You really took a handle on your life. And for real, it shows. Just keep doing what you’ve been doing. Stand up for yourself but be reasonable at the same time. You just got to constantly keep finding that equilibrium.”

“Thanks, man. I appreciate that, bro.”

There was a brief silence.

“Anyway. I’m sorry for like tearing your ear off with all that. Enough about me. How things been going with you? Work good? Everything good with you and Eos?”

“Yeah, man. Shit’s been weirdly good. Like I’ve never felt this level of comfort with anyone before. She just gets me, even when she doesn’t. It’s hard to explain. I’m sure you know what I mean, though.”

“That’s awesome, man. Super happy for you. You deserve it.” Kevin took another swig of his margarita. “Just be careful, though, you know?” he continued.

“Yeah … of course.” Adam paused for a moment. “What do you mean, though?”

“Well, you know, with all this stuff. Obviously, hopefully everything works out, and it seems like you guys really do have a great connection, but people seem to always forget what it’s like to fall in love. And how it feels when you hit the ground … especially if you forget that you need to brace yourself. Or in some cases, maybe pack a fucking parachute.”

Kevin took another swig. This time, Adam joined him.

“I was watching a talk the other day by some biological anthropologist,” Kevin continued, “and I kind of already knew this on a surface level, but she was saying that when you fall in love, it literally shuts down parts of your brain associated with decision making and logic. And it can stay that way for two years. Two fucking years!”

“Seriously? Actually, two years?” Adam responded with a combination of skepticism and concern in his voice.

“Yeah, I mean, it can vary, but yeah, up to two-plus years.”

Suddenly, two men wearing black suits walked up and sat down next to Adam and Kevin. They looked completely out of place, like they were just dropped off out of a movie. They stared forward with stern, rigid looks on their faces. The bartender approached them and asked how they were doing and what they’d like to drink.
